As soon as I knew that I was pregnant with my second daughter, I wanted a different birth experience. I had given birth in a hospital by myself, without my family close by, a cold experience and without affectionate human touch by the hospital staff. For this reason, I was on the search for something better and that is how I found Lauren. From the first time I heard her talk about the option of a homebirth, I loved the idea and she gave me total confidence from our first meeting and so I decided to hire her as my midwife. She was always friendly and I felt supported by her in all the prenatal visits. In the final days before labor, she was always available, she was more than a midwife, but a friend, part of my family as both my older daughter and husband liked to be by her side as well. My homebirth was a marvelous experience where my daughter and husband were present comforting me during labor. Lauren gave me her support and confidence and we knew we were in good hands. Her medical attention that she provided in the postpartum was excellent as well. I can say that we had a beautiful birth experience and I greatly appreciate Lauren who we love so much and actually miss seeing her at the prenatals, haha! For my family, Lauren is a great midwife and we are sure that whoever decides to have her accompany them during their birth will have a beautiful experience.
During the five and a half hours I labored at home with my first child, Lauren was wonderful. She was comforting, patient, and extremely helpful. She guided me through the waves, step by step, moment by moment. She helped me to stop clenching my fists and resisting the pain; she reminded me that I needed to let go of my upper body, let the waves go down, and allow my body to open. She made me feel safe and strong. She reminded me to moan low, not in a high-pitched tone. She recommended different positions, (I preferred to be on all fours.) She suggested I go to the bathroom because an empty bladder would make more room for baby to move down and she was right! After following her instructions, baby’s head began to crown. Not 15 minutes later, after pushing three times, my son was born. Lauren helped me to get him to successfully latch, and she and Cristina sewed up a small tear that I incurred, because baby came out with his hand on his cheek. Lauren was a true asset to me on that day. I am so glad she was there by my side.
As an American living abroad in Mexico, I was very pleased to be attended by Lauren throughout my pregnancy and during the birth of my son. Lauren is a very professional, knowledgeable and personable midwife. During my pregnancy, I always looked forward to my prenatal appointments with Lauren as she took her time (lots of time!) to address me as a whole person, discussing both the physical and emotional aspects of pregnancy and childbirth. And although I had a rough and long labor which ended with a cesarian, Lauren and her team were right alongside me the entire process (40+ hours), doing everything possible to help me and ensure the safe arrival of my baby to the world. I highly recommend Lauren’s services as a professional midwife.
I would say if you want to feel secure, Lauren is the key....
Also she knows about many different methods and cultures and that makes the experience richer...I think that being in México has given her balance in her practice and a greater understanding of birth.
I was pregnant in Mexico and concerned about the lack of rights that women have there while birthing. My biggest fear was giving birth alone (without my partner) and having my baby taken away to the nursery soon after birth. (This happens too frequently in Mexico, as in many parts of the world, I am sure.) I also came to Lauren soon after having a threatened miscarriage. There was a lot of fear that Lauren helped me work through both during pregnancy and during labor itself. She attended to me and my family completely and holistically. Every aspect of my pregnancy from emotional to physical to health to connection with my unborn child, was taken care of by her.
I felt very comfortable with Lauren immediately and as we saw her for consults that each lasted over an hour and addressed every aspect of our physical, emotional and spiritual health as well as my husband’s feelings and our relationship. We also attended prenatal yoga classes and a prenatal couples class with Lauren, both of which greatly helped us prepare mentally and physically for the birth of our first child.
My due date came and went, but Lauren helped us stay patient and calm and wait for when our baby was meant to arrive. At almost 42 weeks, I went to prenatal yoga with Lauren, the midwife, as I did every Wednesday. I felt good and enjoyed stretching and moving. At the end of class, Lauren had me sit in the middle of a circle formed by the other women and asked them to share well wishes and thoughts with me. The comments were all lovely, but one really meant a lot to me. One of the women said that she thought that it was wonderful that I was waiting until my baby was ready instead of making my baby leave her watery home through induction or a c-section. Lauren offered me wonderful support after the birth of my daughter. She helped us begin a wonderful nursing relationship that lasted 3 and 1/2 years, monitored me for postpartum depression and made sure that I was bonding well with my baby. I love the way that my Natalia came into this world. I love that it was under the beautiful Oaxacan sky. I love that the midwives had faith in me and were so calm. We worked together and we did it. The moment of Natalia's birth was the best moment of my life. Last year, when I was pregnant again, I had no question that I wanted another home birth with midwives. I was in Texas this time, so we couldn't go with Lauren again. My Ismael's birth was an equally wonderful experience at home with midwives.
Thank you, Lauren.
